Florence Jowers, Lenoir-Rhyne University associate professor of music, three honors students and one 2009 graduate recently traveled to France and Germany on a two-week tour.
“This was experiential learning at its best!” Jowers said. “The trip allowed these students a chance to see some of the places they had studied.”
Kenneth Miller of Conover and Chelsie Propst of Hickory, senior sacred music majors; Marie Smith of Hickory, a junior art and history major; and Kyle Bates of Charleston, S.C., a 2009 graduate in religious studies and a sacred music minor, helped to plan the tour.
They visited Paris, Chartres, and Mont St. Michel in France before going to Germany, where they saw many of the historic sites of Luther and Bach as well as Buchenwald concentration camp and the remains of the Berlin Wall.
The group spent their nights either on the train or in youth hostels. Miller had preceded the group to Paris by one week so he could study with a world-renowned organist. He also had the opportunity to have a lesson with a German organist and to play several historic instruments.
The students and their professor ate breakfast at the Hofbräu Haus in Munich and were in Leipzig during the largest Goth festival in the world. They heard several concerts and visited some museums. They also spent one day and night in Prague.

Six life-size bronze sculptures depicting athletes in action will soon grace the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University.
The sculptures are a gift of Irwin Belk, a philanthropist interested in college athletics and art. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Irwin Belk Track bears his name, as do more than 30 other collegiate track and field facilities. Belk is a member of the Charlotte family who established the Belk department stores.
“Our association with Irwin Belk has been both delightful and inspiring,” said Neill McGeachy, LRU athletic director. “It pleases us to receive his generous gift of these distinctive artworks.”
Four of the new L-R sculptures have been delivered and erected. The final two are expected in late summer or early fall. The first four statues are part of the first phase of the new Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex. A female javelin thrower and a male soccer player are located in front of the main entrance to the athletic complex, at the corner of Eighth Street N.E. and Sixth Avenue N.E. in Hickory.
A sculpture of a female softball pitcher stands next to the softball field, and a statue of a male baseball batter is located near the baseball field.
The final two statues will be placed in front of the Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on Stasavich Place. They will show a female volleyball player and a male basketball player. (more…)

Kids in College summer enrichment program for gifted students had a “green” theme this year. Students are learning about ways to recycle and help the planet. These students are wearing their recycling vests, which they made from materials that would ordinarily be thrown away.

Students plant some seeds during Kids in College. They also learned how to make compost using food scraps and leaves.

Gwin joined the Lenoir-Rhyne staff in 1996 and was the longest-serving dean of students in L-R history.
