Janet Painter

Janet Painter is a professor of education and teaches courses about curriculum, teaching and learning. She also serves as the director of institutional assessment and director of general education for the university. In her role, Painter teaches professional education courses, humanities courses and seminars. She also facilitates all university programs and departments in assessing for institutional effectiveness, serves as a resource and leader for general education program information and supervises the coordinator of the First-Year Experience. A passionate teacher, mentor and lifelong learner, Painter also co-teaches Great Books and occasionally Honors courses.

Her research interests include assessment, global and comparative education, education policy and studying social education issues, as well as classical language. She has conducted research with students and presented at state and local conferences with them and national and international conferences with her colleagues. Her publications and works have been featured in international journals such as the International Journal of Lifelong Education and Prospects: Comparative Journal of Curriculum, Learning and Assessment, as well as chapters in books such as the Internationalization of Higher Education Handbook and Progress in Education.

In 2015, Painter was awarded the Raymond Morris Bost Distinguished Professor, given annually to honor an LR faculty member for outstanding teaching and mentorship. In addition, she is the 2009 recipient of the Roediger Distinguished Service Professorship, designated annually by the president in recognition of distinguished service to the university, profession and community.

Before returning to her alma mater, she taught at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Davidson College, Catawba College and Gardner-Webb University. In addition to teaching, she enjoys travel, gourmet foods and spirits, reading biographies and classical literature, watching documentaries and sports events.
