Brent Driggers
- Ph.D., M.Div., Divinity, Princeton Theological Seminary
- MTS, Duke Divinity School
- B.A., Wake Forest University
Brent Driggers teaches courses in biblical studies, including a required New Testament survey and various electives in the canonical Gospels and biblical theology (for example, the theme of violence in scripture). His academic publications focus primarily on the Gospel of Mark, employing historically informed narrative criticism to investigate Mark's distinctive contributions to Christian theology and spirituality. Driggers is also a periodic contributor to Working Preacher, an online resource for church leaders.
As a teaching theologian, Driggers seeks to present scripture to cultivate intellectual growth and Christian discipleship. He encourages students to respect the historical context(s) of scripture and commit themselves to lifelong learning in biblical history. At the same time, Driggers places interpretation in conversation with the Christian theological tradition, enabling students to appreciate better how scripture shapes our beliefs and practices. Finally, he emphasizes the indispensable role of contemporary and diverse cultural perspectives in the practice of interpretation (for example, African American, womanist, feminist, LGBTQIA+), thus framing interpretation as a communal endeavor aiding each student's spiritual and multicultural formation.
In his capacity as associate dean of academic programs, Driggers works with seminary leaders, faculty and students to ensure a quality seminary curriculum and a meaningful student experience.
Away from his seminary work, Driggers enjoys preaching and teaching in local churches, reading (theology, history, culture and fiction), listening to music (all genres), hiking and spending time with his family.
